Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) grows up to an incredible height of 75 feet. The star-like leaves make a brilliant showing of yellow, scarlet, or purple in autumn. The small flowers form dense, globe shaped clusters. Later, the branches are laden with prickly, globe-shaped brown capsule fruit.
These trees are effective as tall screens or groves and are ideal for planting along streets.
This native to Eastern U.S. grows from 6 to 10 inches per year.
It is suited to zones 5 to 9 and has a low temperature tolerance of -20F.
