Planting instructions for seedlings shipped from and within Canada:
- Allow enough space for the trees to grow. Mature trees can have a spread of up to 20 feet and, often times, the root spread can match that. You'll want to consider that, when choosing your planting location.
- Keep the soil plug moist.
- Remove any packaging.
- Dig the hole and place the top of the roots even with the soil surface.
- Pack topsoil around the roots and water thoroughly.
- For trees received in Winter, plant in pots until the weather is suitable for outdoor planting.
- During Spring and Summer, you can plant your tree outdoors, as described above.
- Ensure that you water and care for your tree, as you would any garden plant.
Planting instructions for seedlings shipped within the U.S.:
- Find a place with well drained acid soil (ph 5-6.5) and a sunny location.
- Make a hole slightly larger and 1/2 inch deeper than the soil plug.
- Place the seedling in hole 1/2 inch deeper than the top of the plug and pack soil around it firmly.
- Water moderately.
- Mark the spot with stake or flag.
- Let Mother Nature take over.
- If you choose to fertilize your small tree, use only a teaspoon or so and sprinkle it around the tree several inches away. Allow the rain to work the fertilizer into the soil. We recommend 10-10-10 or garden fertilizer.
- If you plant your plug in a pot, try to use a light colored pot and make it at least one gallon, planting the plug in the middle. Do not keep the tree inside for more than two weeks in the winter and if you put it on the porch undercover, don’t forget to water it a couple times.
